The Mepkin Abbey Church was dedicated in 1993. The relative absence of statues, paintings, and art glass are part of a deliberate aesthetic discipline rooted in the simplicity of Cistercian Spirituality. The church features three main architectural elements: natural light, natural materials and balanced proportions.
The free-standing Bell Tower houses four bells stacked upon each other reaching 50 feet tall. This Tower of the Seven Spirits gives voice to the communities buried here: Native Americans, the Laurens Family, the African Americans who worked the land, the Luce Family, the friends of Mepkin inurned in the Columbarium, the monastic community in glory, and finally the monks still here today..
Access to the church is limited to guided tours only and Mass on Sunday. Sunday Mass is at 10 a.m. Scheduled tours are held at 11:30am on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and start at the Gift Shop.
